466th Meeting (05/12/2013) or Snakey, Spidey and Sandy

Meeting Recap:

Best Prepared Speech: Andrew Chen, ATMB, ALS
Best Evaluator: Ang Wee Yong, ACS, ALB
Best Table Topic: Ng Kin Foong, CC

Wasn't that just an AMAZING and AWESOME meeting we had yesterday? When I chose "Magic" as the theme, I didn't think Gandalf the White (aka Darren Loh) would pay us a visit.

First off, our Club President (pronounced "Prezident", now I know, thanks to DTM Joni Siah) talked about his acronym for MAGIC- "Members Are very Great, Inspiring Characters" and the song "Magic" by Olivia Newton-John (watch it here (Preview ).

Next, our Language Evaluator, DTM Joni Siah from Katong TMC, gave us the Word of the Day as "RESPLENDENT", an adjective, which means "very bright and attractive" (Merriam-Webster online definition)

Our first prepared Speech was from Toastmaster Matthew Er, who talked about "Ways to Overcome Depression" I nearly had a heart attack when he shouted "It's really very beautiful" in Cantonese ("真的是漂亮啊!"). He was describing the Lake District in the UK as seen by a Hong Kong tourist (click here to get an idea of the view), I've also attached the photo.

The Second Prepared Speech from ATMB, ALS, Andrew Chen, was about a proposal to the Exco to organize an "Inter-School Storytelling Competition", using the Tampines Changkat CC facilities and involving 13 Primary Schools and 10 Secondary Schools within the vicinity. After a brief technical glitch, the presentation got under way, and Andrew, as usual, was super convincing.

The third Prepared Speech, by CC Kelvin Cheng, was entitled "Singapore Aviation" and Kelvin explained the intricacies of "the nine freedoms" of air travel, and a brief video of the Singapore Airshow. My father worked with the airlines and he never did share "the nine freedoms" with me, thankfully. Kelvin later shared with me his insight that he should have only shown the relevant diagram of the nine freedoms which he was talking about, and not all at once, because that made it look confusing.

Our "Snow White" CC Gladys Tye, gave an insightful evaluation of Matthew Er's P6 speech. Area S6 Governor, ACS, ALB Ang Wee Yong gave a power-packed evaluation of Andrew Chen's speech, saying he was very convincing and more importantly, told us WHY accepting the proposal was important. ACB, CL Chia Choon Kiat evaluated Kelvin Cheng's speech succinctly: "You can fly to my place, I can fly to yours, that's it"

The Table Topics segment was the most interesting I have ever seen, Gandalf the White appeared holding Harry Potter's wand. Toastmaster Darren Loh spent a lot of time and effort preparing for this! He had "Snakey, Spidey and Sandy" ( a snake, a spider and a centipede). The Table Topics include:
1. If you were Spiderwoman, how would you propose to your future husband?
2. If you were to eat this centipede, how would you cook it?
3. If you could cast a spell on the whole world, what spell would it be?
It was an interesting, fascinating and spellbinding 466th Chapter Meeting!

Warm regards,

Carl Wong HL
