Area S4 2006 Humourous Speech and Evaluation Contests

How fast one month passes! On 7th October, Area S4 held its annual Humourous Speech and Evaluation Contests for all its clubs – Changi Simei Toastmasters Club, Lifestyles Toastmasters Club, Singapore Polytechnic Toastmasters Club, Tampines Changkat Toastmasters Club, Tech Ghee Toastmasters Club and Temasek Polytechnic Toastmasters.

What a day! More than 40 guests, visiting Toastmasters, judges, contestants and supporters turned up, and what a difference they made to the atmosphere of the event! Thank you all who turned up.

Every Toastmasters meeting is an opportunity to learn and I’m sure all of us walked about with a smile from the many hilarious punchlines delivered by the humourous speech contestants and in addition, learnt the finer points of evaluating speeches from the Evaluation contestants.
Here's the line up on the day:

Humourous Speech Contest
1. Lim Da Hong
2. Jamie Bon
3. James Wai
4. Edwin Por
5. Lim Bao Lun

Evaluation Contest
Test Speaker: Johnny Teo, from NTU Alumni Toastmasters Club
1. Varinder Singh Bal
2. Anthony Ong
3. Tracy Tang
4. Jamie Bon

What masterful punches of humour did the humourous speech contestants deliver! Da Hong told us why he was sick of money, while Jamie told us that we can’t actually use our fingers to write the number 6 in the air while turning our feet in a clockwise direction! Boy was that good!

James reminded us the pet peeves of some men at home, adding that it is women that encourages men to do some of the things they do (which the women hate!). While Da Hong told us why he hated money, Edwin told us the 8 ways to make money, not forgetting to remind us to jump out of our dreams and choose only the eighth way to earn money.

Finally, of course Bao Lun told us that when solving problems, we must know the right problem to solve so that one problem will not lead to another.
Our lips were spread so wide that we had difficulty munching our food after the humourous speech contest was over!

Food was great as usual. I mean that’s one of the reasons why we attend Toastmasters meetings right? Just kidding! It was a time to catch up with the contestants, friends and to make new ones.

Right, next up. The evaluation contest. Johnny Teo, a polished Toastmaster, delivered his test speech titled “Go out and TAN!” With an attention grabbing cheer, he started his speech and shared with us the crazy things he did during his freshmen orientation in the first year of university. He shared his experiences and raised examples using the experiences of others to inspire us to Take Action Now! Johnny is indeed a great speaker, and we definitely will see more of him in future Toastmasters events.

After a short and frantic 5 minutes given to the Evaluation contestants, one by one they walked in, and one by one they point out the excellent points made by Johnny and encouraged him to improve on his few weaker areas. They were all first class feedback for Johnny and I’m sure, not only did Johnny learn much for him to grow in his Toastmasters journey, the audience benefited much from the great display of evaluation skills by all the contestants.

The time just flew past and it was time for the announcement of the results. But wait! Before that, the Contest Chair, Winson Lim from Singapore Polytechnic Toastmasters Club, cracked us up further with laughter when he told us how the man in the fridge died! We were nearly rolling on the floor!

Yes, results time! After the contestants gave their best, and after the hard work done by the judges, the results! Drum rolls! Drums! Claps! Slaps! And the winner goes to (and the follow up prize winners)...

Humourous Speech Contest
Winner – James Wai
First Runner up – Lim Bao Lun
Second Runner up – Lim Da Hong

Evaluation Contest
First Runner up – Varinder Singh Bal
Second Runner up – Tracy Tang

The winner of both contests will go on to represent the Area at the Division contests held on the 4th of November 2006, Saturday, 2pm at AIA Changi Toastmasters Club. Let's give our encouragement to the two winners! And be there to support them!
