Recap of 402nd Chapter meeting on 21st April

21st April was the eve of a public holiday. The evening of fun and excitement sure lighten up our mood as we approach the long weekend, all thanks to the laughter brought in by our visiting toastmasters.

The sergeant-at-arms reminded us to be grateful of life by beginning with a thought provoking question-of-the-evening, " what is one thing you are thankful of today? " Well, our passionate members are mostly thankful of the simplest thing- being able to be present in the chapter meeting. Same goes for me!

I am the toastmaster of the evening once again:) It just gets addictive once you started on it due to the fun that comes along!

We are so glad to have 2 non-toastmasters and 4 toastmasters visiting us on this meeting. It is always so heart-warming to have a crowd with us that livens our chapter meeting.

The 1st speaker for the evening is our VPE, Shuan who touches us with his story, "Hero." His trademark dramatic speaking style almost brought me into the scene of his story. Thumbs up to our wonderful storyteller.

Ulysses, our youngest member is the next speaker. Do not be deceived by his young age as his experience in public speaking is unparalleled. With his humorous speech, he tickle our funny bone as he shared his experience of " how i'm learning to sing" and obtained the best speaker title.

Angela taught us how to gain a more fulfilling relationship through her 5 languages of love.

Lee JinHwui won the best evaluator title with his extremely detailed evaluation on Ulysses's speech.

The table topics segment conducted by our visiting toastmaster, Linda was exceptionally exciting this evening. I simply have to salute her for the efforts taken in preparing for this segment. Once again, It is the great spirit of fellow toastmasters that inspire me to keep on going. Thank you Linda.

Our language evaluation was also done by a visiting toastmaster, DTM John Sih and was particularly entertaining with his inject of humor. At the same time, it provided tremendous value to our club with his account of the usage of good and 'not so good' English.

It sure was another full-filled meeting, especially with so many guests around. Don't worry if you have missed out the fun as the next meeting is just 2 weeks away on the 5/5/2011. See you there!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

14 April was an inspiring night!!!

It was a night where I witnessed the growth of our members.
It was a night of many firsts
It was a night where my beliefs in TM was reinforced.

On Growth:

Ted broke through by delivering a speak to inform speech...
.......a differentiation from his inspirational and persuasive style

ZhiYong internalized his speech and delivered...clarity, purpose, fluency all was a mark above his P2 and P1.

Andrew, once asked me: "Have you improved since you joined TM?" I answered: "Yes"
"There You have it, you have proven that TM works!", Andrew replied.

ZhiYong and Ted, thanks for showing me what TM can do for us again!!!

On the many Firsts:

Esther delivered a wonderful P1, and won the better prepared speech speaker. If only you had saw her before she delivered her speech, she was tense and a bundle of nerves, but her love in self improvement propelled her to soar in her maiden speech in TM. Excellent!!!!

Matthew was the TME, and oh my...he was in control, he was entertaining to watch...and he was the TME the first time. You couldn't have told..excellent job my friend

JinSen was the TTM, and he did an excellent job, selecting topics that were both relevant and had scope for entertainment.
The thing was, he had an urgent assignment and still turned up nonetheless, an excellent trait of a leader.

In TM, we all seek but one thing: self improvement. We have speech contests every year, but the one contest that's most important is the one with yourself....

I repeat again the question from Andrew, "Have you improved since you joined TM?"
If yes, fantastic! If no, have you really experienced TM?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I attached the program sheet and I invite you to experience TM on the 21st April, this coming Thursday.

Where? At Tampines Changkat TMC, where there is food for the tummy, food for thoughts and fun for everyone.

Regards,

Shaun

Tips sharing by Division S speech contest champion

In Tampines Changkat toastmaster club, we walk among giants and titans who are always selfless in helping fellow toastmasters grow.
One of our old guards, DTM, Lee Jinhwui of Tampines Changkat toastmaster club has recently done our club proud by emerging as the champion of Division S table topics contest and the 1st runner up for international speech contest. We are so fortunate as a member of tampines Changkat toastmaster club to have them with us.

For the benefit of fellow toastmasters, Jinhwui has kindly volunteered to share some strategies on winning speech contests. Following is the question and answer by Lee Jin Hwui on developing contest-winning speech.

1) How do you remember your speech? Any techniques involved?
Memorising scripts has been a real challenge for me. I find it difficult to recall the lines whilst simultaneously protraying the corresponding emotions, thus running a higher risk of the speech being delivered in a mechanical way.

I use mindmaps instead. I start with the broad overall structure of the speech and the message for the audience. Thereafter, I pen down key words which triggers my thought flow on each point. Therefore, instead of memorising scripts, I memorise key points.

There are many programmes and youtube clips available on how to create and use mindmaps.

2) How many times did you rehearse your speech ?
As many times as possible. Practice always increase your confidence. =)

3) How long did you take to prepare ?
I wrote my script in over one weekend.

4) Did you use the same speech for club, area and division contest ?
Yup. My script was gradually fine-tuned with feedback from the folks in Tampines Changkat and Tampines Changkat Advanced Toastmasters.

5) Your speech was very touching. What is the secret in evoking the audience's emotions?
Focus on the finer aspects of things in life, such as filial piety, rising from the ashes of ruin, uncontiditional love between two people. The possibilities are endless. More importantly use personal stories, the originality helps.

6) Any other advice you can give to fellow toastmasters ?
Public Speaking is a skill which builds on momentum. Once you get going, always stay the course and ride on the momentum.

Always be ready to explore different topics and speaking styles.

Free yourself from all limiting beliefs. Your capacity to deliver a world-class specch is no less than the current luminaries in the public speaking world.

Most importantly enjoy every second of your public speaking opportunities

Thank you JinHwui for the valuable sharing on developing contest winning speech! I hope members have benefited from this. To learn more, do visit our club at Tampines Changkat CC on every 1st and 3rd thursday of the month and you will be on your way to becoming a contest winner just like Jinhwui in no time.

401st Chapter meeting flashback

We ended another evening filled with fun and meaning. Let us recall the happenings of this evening.
The sergeant-at-arms kick-start the meeting this evening with a question of the day, " who is your hero?" We had answers such as superman, spiderman and 'my father.' However,to me, i felt that everyone in the room is my hero today because they are all individuals who spent time this evening to improve on themselves.

Our club president, Coen set the tune for this meeting with his usual inspirational opening address, prompting us to re-look into our mental garden. It was certainly a good wake-up call for me to tidy up my own garden and to plant the right crops in me. Thanks Coen.

I was the first prepared speech speaker for the meeting and i am so glad to share with our audience, 'the power of internet marketing.' It was my first time giving a technical speech with powerpoint slides. Another breakthrough for me!

The 2nd speaker is Zhiyong, delivering his 3rd project. Using his own life story, he shared about the differences between working in a small and big enterprise. He spoke about the advantages of working in a small company in an articulate manner. I am always inspired by the vast improvement of fellow toastmaster like Zhiyong. Way to go!

The final speaker is Esther who is delivering her maiden speech. Let us congratulate Esther as she embarked on her toastmaster journey. I got to know so much about Esther tonight after her introduction on herself. Her composure on the stage had also won her the best speaker of the evening for a 1st-timer, congrats!

Christine from NOL toastmaster club won the best evaluation with her value-packed evaluation on Esther.

For our table topics segment, we are so honored to have Lee JinHwui, division S table topics Champion with us this evening.I am so proud of ZhiQiang, our member who clinched the best table topic speaker title this evening with his sincere sharing of life without toastmasters.

For those who have missed out on this meeting, fret not! the next meeting is just a week away on the 21/4/11, thursday. See you there ! Visitors are welcomed !

Its in Penang, where a historical moment occurred:

It was a moment of sharing, bonding and enlightening.

Our speakers, Linda and Coen did us proud by delivering their project speeches in foreign territories.
Coen even added the jewel to the crown by obtaining the "Best Prepared Speech Speaker" by completing his P10 for the second time.

Our own Michael and ChengLee also wowed the audience with their in-depth evaluation.
BBTM audience were certainly impressed, reflected by the way rapturous applause were showered on them.

400th Chapter Meeting 31/3/11

It was the 400th Chapter meeting of Tampines Changkat Toastmasters Club and it represents a significant milestone in our club's history, having groomed countless excellent speakers over the count of 18years.
At the same time, we are excited to receive 4 visiting guests at our Club on this special day.

In the opening address, our president, Coen Tan gave credits to our charter members, Chong Cheng Lee and Michael Wee to thank them for their selfless efforts in contributing to the club for 18 years. Thank you Michael and Cheng Lee for your continuous commitment!

It was the first time I am taking up the appointment as the Toastmaster of the evening. I was extremely excited at the opportunity to take up the role and to host this wonderful meeting. It was another step out of my comfort zone, as always the case in toastmaster. Thank you our VPE for this chance.

The prepared speech segment never fails to interest us. The 1st speaker, Ulyssess gave an account of how to change a person through his experience in facilitating the speechcraft workshop at Bedok View secondary school. I learned from Uly that changing a person all boils down to sincerity and a truthful self. It was truly an inspiring speech with an important message. It is no surprise that Uly received the best speaker of the evening.

After being weighed down by Uly's touching speech, Matthew lighten up our mood with his humorous speech" Are you from Hongkong?" He talks about his experience of being labelled as a Hongkie and how he handles the generalization by Singaporeans in a hearty way.

Atindra shared an important message that small experiences in life can be enriching which i truly agree. Live in the moment. No matter how precarious the situation may seem, find the joy of being in it.

JinSen taught us about the essence of forex trading as he completes his project 8. As always, his mini course is especially convincing and informative.

The evaluation segment at our club is always value-filled with our countless titans and giants.
Michael won the speech evaluation segment with his evaluation on Matthew.

The table topics segment this evening is so inspiring! Firstly, Our TTM, Zhi Qiang came up with a series of questions in line with today's theme of path finding. Next, i am so glad that all our visitors courageously volunteer to speak on our table topics. In fact, we have a handful of audiences vying with each other for the chance to speak! Gladys, our 1st-time visitor clinched the honor of the best table topic speaker with her story on how being a HR officer have taught her to head in correct direction without rush.

Once again, we ended a day of meaning and fulfillment in our club. For those who have missed out on this fun-filled meeting, fret not, our next chapter meeting is on the 14th April 2011 . Hope to see you there!
