Thoughts of the Month for July!

Every now and then, we might be inspired by articles from the internet or real life experiences. I believe they are interesting and enlightening and it would be a nice to put it on this blog. To kick start this section, we have a contribution from our President, Coen Tan:

Validation is overrated

If you're waiting for a boss or an editor or
a college to tell you that you do good work, you're handing over too much power to someone who doesn't care nearly as much as you do.

We spend a lot of time organizing and then waiting for the system to pick us, approve of us and give us permission to do our work.

Feedback is important, selling is important, getting the market to recognize your offering and make a sale--all important. But there's a difference between achieving your goals and realizing your work matters.

If you have a book to write, write it. If you want to record an album, record it. No need to wait for someone in a cubicle halfway across the country to decide if you're worthy. (Extracted from the Blog of Seth Godin, a writer whose works and original thoughts I admire).

384th Chapter Meeting Summary

Its been weeks since the 384th Chapter Meeting and it was definitely a Success! So for some of you who missed it, here are some of the highlights and words of appreciation from Shaun Li, Our dashing VPE!

__________________________________________________________________

Dear all,

It was 15 Jul 10, and I was inspired, in awe and impressed. Once again, we are treated to a delightful display of oratorical and dramatic finesse by all the speakers.

Great job Crispin, our TME of the day! Thank you for bringing much life and laughter into our club.

Who can forget how he did a twist on Gim Leong’s SPH to a girl’s heart and by turning it into the Silly, Poor and Hopeless ways not to get a girl’s heart.

Thank you Sharon! Thank you for giving us the timely reminder that life in Singapore wasn’t always so prosperous. Thank you for reminding us that Singapore’s progress and development is built on the blood, sweat and tears of our pioneers.

For those who are unattached, Gim Leong was an angel of hope. He had let on to us the secrets to the heart of that special someone! For those who are attached, he reminded us that the special one’s not easy to come by, cherish it.

Tampines Changkat TMC’s monthly birthday celebrations will no longer be the same. That’s especially, after the enlightenment by Daniel that Birthday’s celebrations is a reminder that everyone’s special.

“I don’t have any ideas!”, “I don’t have a storyline!” These are constant laments by the many toastmasters. However, Terry has shown us the best ideas come from our daily life experience. A light hearted tale of his maiden drinking experience has certainly enraptured and entertained us. Speech crafters, Terry’s tip to you: Start living and start observing.

Ever wondered why you bought something and grew to regret it? We tend to be self critical when that happens. Now we know the true culprit, dopamines! Thanks Coen, thanks for shedding light on our cravings for shopping.

On behalf of our club, I salute our Project Evaluators, Sua Ying of NUSS TMC, Saddiq and Saddiqi of Nee Soon East TMC, as well as our own Thomas and Tony. Thank you for highlighting on what our speakers have done well, so that we will know our strengths. Thank you for giving tips on how we improve our game of speech crafting and presentation. Thank you for demonstrating how to give a proper evaluation.

Giving English lessons for free, this is how a Toastmaster described the role of an LE. While not a Teacher by profession, our LE, Johnny from NTU Alumni TMC has certainly done a language evaluation that gave English Teachers, a run for their money. Furthermore, he had reminded us of the presence of a precious gem in our book shelves which we often neglect. It’s none other than our dictionary. A big thank you from our club, we have certainly learnt a lot from you!

Of course, how can we forget the various appointment holders without which the chapter cannot be held? Installing Officer, Michael; SAA, Zhi Qiang; Ah Counter, Linda; and Timer, Atindra. Thank you for answering to our Club’s call when we needed you!

Member and Audience, don’t think that we have forgotten you! Your energy and enthusiasm have certainly enliven the meeting. Keep it up.

If you find this Chapter Meeting great, wait till you have seen the next one. Stay tune for the next chapter meeting on the 5th of August 2010!!!

Regards,

Shaun Li

Tampines Changkat Toastmasters Club 384th Chapter Meeting

Join us this Thursday night for our club’s 384th Chapter Meeting. It promises to be an action packed event. This is a sneak preview of what's going to happen:

• Missed our installation on 01 July 2010 at AIA Changi. Fret not! We will be bringing it home to Tampines Changkat CC!!!

• After taking the best prepared speech speaker ribbon on her maiden voyage in Toastmasters, what will Sharon Hor have in stall for us as she presents her Project 2 Speech?

• I have heard that Tan Gim Leong will be sharing with us a secret in his upcoming Project 4 speech. Shh....Lets look forward in anticipation!

• Daniel Lim, has been providing us with rich insights through his speeches laden with his life experience. What life lessons does he have to impart to us this time?

• Terry Tan has this unique brand of humor, will he seek to tickle our senses with his Project 6 speech?

• Of course, we have Coen Tan, our dynamic and bombastic President who will be explaining to us an abstract concept with Advance Project 5 of the Speak to inform Manual

• We also look forward to an equally illustrious line up of experienced Project Evaluators, Thomas Tan, Tony Hoo, as well as invited guests Lum Sau Ying from NUSS TMC as well as Mohamad Saddiq and Mohamad Saddiqi from Nee Soon East TMC.

• For the role of the Master of Ceremony, we have invited a guest to be our TME, he is non other than Crispin Rodrigues from Eurasian Association TMC

• I will like to acknowledge the following members who have agreed to take up appointments in this Chapter Meeting. They are, Lim Zhi Qiang as SAA, Michael Wee as Installing Officer, Atindra Ghosh as timer, Shaun Li as Table Topic Master and Linda Huang as Ah Counter.

Tips for Prepared Speech Projects

Dear Members,
We join a Toastmasters Club primarily to improve our Public Speaking Skills, and as members of the club, you will receive regular Tips from the Exco on Public Speaking.
Hope you will find these tips useful in crafting your speeches. Have fun crafting!
This week’s Tip: Keep a Story File!
Very often I hear the common grouse from members “I have no Ideas for Speeches!” Actually, the best resources for speeches are from our everyday life! If you had an interesting encounter, write it down! If you saw / heard something funny on your way to work, write it down! If your friend told you an interesting story, write it down!
Stories are the best resources for speech ideas, and the best thing is that they are happening to / around Us everyday! We just need to open our eyes and ears big enough, and write them down.
