2009/2010 Tampines Changkat Toastmasters Club Newsletter Issue 2

Tampines Changkat Community Club Open House –  27th Septemeber 2009

Tampines Changkat Community Club was celebrating their Open House and we were given to an opportunity to publicise to the general public on what we do as a Tampines Changkat Toastmaster.

It was a simple yet grand event. The Guest-Of-Honour of the event was Ms Irene Ng, MP for Tampines GRC and Adviser to Tampines GROs. It was our priviledge to let her know more about Tampines Changkat Toastmasters Club and how we helped our member to improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills.
Our Members, Tony Hoo, Simon Tey, Luan Eng and Kelvin Cheng

We like to take this opportunity to thank Tampines Changkat Community Club to allow us to do our publicity to the general public in this special occasion. At the same time, we also like to thank the Tampines Changkat Community Club for your hospitality you had given to us. Thank You.

New Year Note

Dear members of Tampines Changkat Toastmasters Club, a Happy New Year to you!!

Have you made your new year’s Resolutions yet?
What are your goals for this year?
To begin writing that business plan?
To lose weight?
To complete your speech projects and attain your Competent Communicator Award?

Well, let me share with you a secret...

DON'T SET GOALS!

Whenever we think of goals, we think of it being a destination we are striving to arrive at.  Haven’t we heard enough motivational speeches and read enough self-help books that tell us to set goals and work hard towards them?  Well, if you think about it, how often is the word “work” associated with “fun”?

There lies the issue!  Work is seldom fun, and goals are not inherently motivating because they are just a state.  Instead, set adventures for yourself!  An adventure is definitely more fun!  An adventure allows you to picture yourself as part of the scene, the emotions and sensations you are feeling as you are doing what you set out to do.  You can see clearly the scenery, the people celebrating and sharing the joy with you.  How powerful do you feel as you create results after results for yourself?

For examples, you have set completing your 10 basic projects as your goal, it may seem a really worthy goal at first, but the work of choosing a topic to present, researching, writing the speech, rehearsing, is just too much work!  When there’s work commitment, and family responsibilities as well, perhaps getting the Competent Communicator goal is just not so important after all.  A Competent Communicator Award has less value in itself.  Other than being able to be addressed as a CC in Toastmasters circles, it is not going to help you earn more money, have better relationships or be a professional speaker.

However, if you look at it as an adventure, imagine what fun it will be to present on a topic that you are passionate about?
What will it look like if you can see yourself getting more and more confident when you speak?
What will your audience say to you after you gave a speech from your heart?

Fellow Toastmasters, set adventures for yourself this year!  Allow yourself to try things you never thought you can do.

And while you are at it, enjoy the journey!

To a better 2010 for you!

Motivational Speech Techniques
- Article extracted from Toastmasters International

Five simple strategies to motivate your listeners.

One of the most important elements of leadership is the ability to motivate people.

Without motivation, even the most skilled team of seasoned professionals is unlikely to achieve great things. A highly motivated group of talented people, on the other hand, can move mountains.

While it’s true that motivating people involves more than just changing the way you speak, there are some simple guidelines you can follow to help build team motivation with only your words and your voice:

Be enthusiastic. Enthusiasm is contagious! Before you present your ideas, think about    the aspects of the subject that you find most interesting, and don’t be afraid to let that interest come through in your voice.

Use quotes, stories and anecdotes. Along with their obvious entertainment value, quotes and stories can lend authority to your topic and provide concrete examples that people can relate to.

Speak with confidence. Deliver your message loud and clear. Maintain eye contact with your listeners. Don’t mumble or slouch.

Say you and we, not I and me. Instead of telling people what you want them to do, present ways for them to work together to achieve their goals. Involve listeners in the success of the group.

Keep it simple. People aren’t motivated by what you say; they’re motivated by what they understand. The best way to ensure audience understanding is to break down complex ideas into simple components.

Tampines Changkat Toastmasters Club 370th Chapter Meeting - 21 Jan 2010

Tell you what, it's just going to get better!  Join us for our Chapter Meeting this Thursday 21th January!

Highlights include:

  • We have not 1, but 2 educational segments this Meeting!  Firstly, Coen Tan will giving a 35 - 40 minute talk on ways to add impact to our speeches.  This mini workshop has been conducted in other Toastmasters Clubs and it was well received.
"Dear Coen, you have conducted the session with a difference. You have masterfully given us a word, "SUCCESS" and based on the acronym you showed us how each letter could represent a certain strategy or technique in presenting a speech. I felt that was very cleverly done and you did analyse our speeches well based on these concepts. Well done  for doing such a good job."

- Daisy Neo, President 2009 / 2010, Raffles Town Club Toastmasters Club
  • Gregory Ernoult, yes the French Toastmasters who charmed his way into our hearts last year is back with us, and back with a bang!  He will be presenting a Project from the "Better Speaker Series" manual, and he will be giving us valuable tips to master Impromptu Speaking.
  • After Gregory's talk, everyone must be itching to apply those tips at the Table Topic Session, which will be facilitated by the much-loved Shaun Li.  Shaun is never short of a trick or 2, and this time, we shall see what he has up his sleeves!  Not forgetting our Prepared Speech Speaker, Linda Huang who will be attempting her Project 3 Speech.

With this and more, there is no reason for you to be anywhere else, but Tampines Changkat TMC this Thursday!

Date: 21st Jan 2010 (Thursday)
Venue: Tampines Changkat Community Club
Time: 7.30pm

Hope to see you there.
